A vegetarian diet can meet every pregnancy need β protein, iron, calcium and folate β when it is planned well. Here is a simple 7-day Indian template you can rotate all nine months, adjusting portions to your appetite and your doctor’s advice.
The Daily Framework
Every day, aim for: 3 servings of dairy (milk, curd, paneer), 2 to 3 servings of dal or legumes, 5 servings of fruit and vegetables, whole grains at each meal, a handful of nuts and seeds, and 8 to 10 glasses of water. Your iron, calcium and folic acid supplements ride alongside food β iron away from tea, coffee and milk.
The 7-Day Rotation
- Monday: Veg poha with peanuts + milk Β· dal, rice, palak sabzi, curd Β· paneer paratha with curd
- Tuesday: Ragi dosa with chutney Β· rajma chawal with salad Β· khichdi with ghee and a glass of milk
- Wednesday: Besan chilla with mint chutney Β· chole, roti, beetroot salad Β· curd rice with sautΓ©ed vegetables
- Thursday: Oats upma with vegetables Β· sambar, rice, bhindi sabzi Β· moong dal cheela with paneer filling
- Friday: Idli sambar Β· methi dal, jowar roti, kachumber Β· vegetable daliya with curd
- Saturday: Stuffed vegetable paratha with curd Β· dal makhani (light), rice, broccoli sabzi Β· tomato soup with paneer toast
- Sunday: Moong sprouts (cooked) salad with chaat masala + milk Β· veg pulao with raita and papad Β· sabudana khichdi with peanuts
Snack Bank (pick 2 to 3 daily)
Seasonal fruit, a date-and-nut ladoo, roasted makhana, buttermilk, sprouts bhel (cooked sprouts), til chikki in winter, coconut water, or a small bowl of kheer on celebration days. Snacks are where the extra 300 calories of later pregnancy comfortably fit.
Vegetarian Watch-Points
Iron and B12 are the two nutrients vegetarian moms must mind. Pair iron-rich foods (greens, dates, jaggery, ragi) with vitamin C, and take the B12 supplement your doctor prescribes β it is not optional in a vegetarian pregnancy. If twins, diabetes or low weight gain are in the picture, get this plan personalised by a dietitian.
