Walk into any baby store and you would think a newborn needs a small warehouse. The truth: babies need very little, and half the “essentials” gather dust. Here is the honest Indian checklist β what to buy, what to borrow, and what to skip.
Clothing (Buy Small Quantities)
Six to eight jhablas or front-open cotton vests, two sizes (newborn sizes are outgrown in weeks), six pairs of mittens and socks, three to four caps, and two soft towels. In winter, add two warm layers and a shawl. Traditional soft cotton from old saris makes the best baby sheets β grandmother was right. Skip: shoes (pointless before walking), fancy outfits (worn once, photographed, outgrown).
Feeding
If breastfeeding: two to three feeding bras, a feeding pillow (or a regular pillow works), and a manual pump for occasional relief. If bottle-feeding: four bottles, a brush, and a way to sterilise (a clean pot of boiling water works as well as an electric steriliser). Skip: formula stockpiles before knowing what suits baby, bottle warmers, fancy nursing covers when a dupatta does the job.
Sleep and Safety
The safest setup is a firm flat surface in your room β a simple cot or a clean mattress arrangement, no pillows, no loose blankets, baby on the back. The traditional jhula brings joy; just ensure firm flat bedding and supervision. Buy: two waterproof sheets, four swaddle cloths. Skip: cot bumpers and soft toys in the sleep space (safety risk), expensive bassinets used for eight weeks.
Hygiene and Health
Newborn-size diapers (one small pack first β sizes change fast), cotton balls, coconut oil, mild baby soap and shampoo used sparingly, a soft hairbrush, nail scissors with rounded tips, and a digital thermometer. A simple first-aid contact list matters more than a fancy kit: paediatrician, hospital, and a 24-hour pharmacy.
Genuinely Useful Extras
A baby carrier or sling (hands-free soothing), a sturdy bag for outings, and a good water flask for mom. If budget allows one big purchase, a quality car seat for car-owning families is the one safety item worth every rupee.
The Borrowing Economy
Indian families excel at passing down baby gear β swings, walkers, winter wear, even barely-used cots. Accept gladly and pass along when done. Babies truly need milk, warmth, sleep and you. Everything else is packaging.
