Returning to Work After Maternity Leave: A Guide for Indian Moms

The last week of maternity leave has a particular ache to it. Returning to work after a baby is a transition for the whole family β€” and with planning, it can work well for everyone, including the baby.

Know Your Rights

India’s Maternity Benefit (Amendment) Act provides 26 weeks of paid leave for the first two children in covered establishments, plus provisions for work-from-home arrangements by mutual agreement and a creche requirement for larger organisations. Know what your employer offers beyond the law β€” many companies now add flexibility, phased returns and nursing breaks. Ask; the worst answer is no.

Plan Childcare Early

Whether it is grandparents, a nanny, a daycare or a combination, start the arrangement two to three weeks before joining β€” not the night before. Trial runs reveal everything: how baby settles, how long handovers take, what instructions the caregiver actually needs written down. For daycares, visit unannounced once, check ratios and hygiene, and trust your instinct over the brochure.

If You Are Breastfeeding

You can absolutely continue. Build a small freezer stash in the two weeks before joining (one extra pumping session a day is enough). At work, you will need a pump, a cool bag, and 15 to 20 minutes two or three times a day β€” block the slots in your calendar like meetings. Feed directly morning and night; many mothers find these bookend feeds become the most treasured part of the day.

Surviving the Emotions

Guilt visits almost every returning mother. Remember what the research consistently shows: children of working mothers do just fine β€” what matters is the quality of care and love around them, which you have arranged with so much effort. The first two weeks are the hardest; it genuinely settles. Allow yourself to miss the baby and to enjoy your work β€” both at once, without apology.

Practical Tricks That Help

  • Rejoin on a Wednesday or Thursday β€” a two-day first week is kinder.
  • Prep clothes, bags and bottles the night before, every night.
  • Share the morning routine explicitly with your husband β€” lists beat assumptions.
  • Keep a photo on your desk and the daycare’s number on speed dial; then close the tab and work. Compartments are healthy.
  • Guard your evenings: the hour after pickup belongs to the baby, not the inbox.

You are not leaving your baby; you are widening their world β€” and modelling, every day, what a capable woman looks like.
