The first trimester is the most delicate and the most invisible part of pregnancy. From the outside nothing has changed, yet inside, your baby grows from a single cell into a tiny human with a beating heart. Here is what every Indian mom-to-be should know about weeks 1 to 12.
What Happens to Your Baby
By week 6 the heart starts beating. By week 8, tiny arms and legs appear. By week 12, your baby is about the size of a lime, with all major organs formed and working. This rapid construction is why the first trimester matters so much for nutrition and care.
Common Symptoms and Simple Remedies
Morning sickness affects up to 8 in 10 mothers β and despite the name, it can strike any time. Keep dry biscuits or roasted makhana by your bed and eat before standing up. Ginger tea, lemon water and small frequent meals genuinely help. Extreme tiredness, sore breasts, frequent urination and food aversions are all normal. If you cannot keep any food or water down, see your doctor β this needs treatment.
Your First Doctor Visits
Book your first appointment as soon as the home test is positive. Expect blood tests (haemoglobin, blood group, thyroid, sugar), a dating ultrasound between weeks 6 and 9, and the NT scan around weeks 11 to 13. Start prenatal vitamins immediately β folic acid is non-negotiable in these weeks.
What to Eat and What to Avoid
Fill your plate with dal, seasonal vegetables, fruits, curd and whole grains. Avoid raw papaya, unpasteurised milk, undercooked eggs and meat, and limit caffeine to one small cup a day. There is no safe amount of alcohol or smoking in pregnancy.
Telling Your Family
Many Indian families wait until after the first trimester to share the news, since the risk of miscarriage drops sharply after week 12. There is no right or wrong β share when you feel ready, and make sure at least one person close to you knows in case you need support.
The first trimester asks a lot of you while showing little. Be patient with your body β the golden second trimester is coming.
