Second Trimester Guide: Weeks 13 to 27 of Pregnancy

Welcome to the golden phase of pregnancy. The nausea of the first trimester usually fades, your energy returns, and a lovely bump finally announces your news to the world. Here is everything Indian moms-to-be should know about weeks 13 to 27.

What Happens to Your Baby

This is the trimester of incredible growth. By week 16 your baby can make sucking motions; by week 20 they are about the size of a banana and you will likely feel the first flutters β€” called quickening. Hearing develops around week 18, so start talking and singing; your baby is listening. By week 24, the viability milestone, babies born early have a real chance with intensive care. Eyebrows, eyelashes and tiny fingerprints all form now.

How You Will Feel

Most women call this their favourite trimester. Appetite returns β€” honour it with iron, calcium and protein rather than just cravings. You may notice a dark line down your belly (linea nigra), darker patches on the face, and thicker, shinier hair. All normal, all hormone-driven, and most fade after delivery. Some women feel round ligament pain β€” short, sharp twinges on the sides of the bump when changing position. Slow movements help.

Important Tests and Scans

The anomaly scan (level 2 ultrasound) between weeks 18 and 22 is the big one β€” it checks every organ system in detail. Your doctor will also order the glucose tolerance test between weeks 24 and 28 to screen for gestational diabetes, which is increasingly common in Indian mothers and very manageable when caught early. Keep taking your iron and calcium supplements at different times of day for best absorption.

Making the Most of the Golden Phase

This is your window for everything that is harder later: the babymoon trip (before week 28 is safest for travel), setting up the nursery, prenatal yoga classes, and dental checkups. Start sleeping on your left side now to build the habit. Begin pelvic floor (Kegel) exercises β€” your future self will thank you. And take photos of the growing bump; you will treasure them.

Call Your Doctor If

Report bleeding, severe abdominal pain, regular tightening, fluid leaking, severe headaches or sudden swelling of face and hands immediately. After week 24, get familiar with your baby’s movement pattern β€” it becomes your daily reassurance in the third trimester.
